The Atkins Diet Plan
is a very strict low-carbohydrate diet plan that I don't approve of. Of course, others do, and that's fine. But the diet puts the body in a state of ketosis which I know is harmful to the kidneys. So if you have weakened kidneys at all, I wouldn't advise it!
First of all with the Atkins Diet Plan, there is an induction phase which is to superstart the body into a rapid weight loss. You only receive 20 grams of carbohydrates per day which can make you grouchy, listless, sleepy, and dizzy.
In this starter phase, you can have some vegetables like green beans, leeks, lettuce, and others that are totally free from starch. Atkins has a food list of allowable foods you can eat. And if the food is not listed, it is not allowed.
This starter plan of the diet should go on for 14 days according to the author. After that, it's phase 2 where more carbohydrates are slowly introduced. This is the OWL, which means ongoing weight loss phase. The weight loss will then slow down to 1-2 pounds per week. It has to be tested by each individual as to how many carbohydrates they can include in the plan and still lose their weight. That is called the critical carbohydrate level for losing.
Each week on the Atkins Diet Plan, you add 5 grams of carbohydrates more back into your diet. Atkins has a ladder of how you should do this which until you are close to your goal, which is about within 5 pounds of it:
1. You can eat salad which is tossed and other non-starch vegetables.
2. A lot of cheeses
3. Nuts and Seeds
4. Berries and then ad melons
5. Low carbohydrate wines
6. Legumes
7. Fresh Fruits
8. Vegetables with starch
9. Whole grains
This is the general plan which gets better along the way. Atkins agrees with a slow weight loss over at least a 2 or 3 month time period.
After you have lost the desired weight, then it is time to figure out how many carbohydrates you can eat and keep your weight off.
A variety of menus are offered on this plan. You can search on Amazon.com, type in books "Atkins Diet," and see what is out there.
The big fault with this plan is that it is simply not well rounded enough like Weight Watchers. Any diet that takes away a lot of foods even in moderation is depriving a person, and therefore you can't stick with it. And as I said earlier, I am not in favor of feeling grouchy and deprived!
Exercise and walking is scarcely talked about with this diet plan.
Before you think of trying this diet plan which I think is radical, TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT IT!
