Food Addiction

Food Addiction is a serious illness. While some people dismiss it as lack of self control it goes far beyond just the inability to curb the desire to eat. This has only recently been acknowledged as a serious issue within society. Overeating can lead to various serious medical conditions, such as diabetes, heart problems and even death. It is simply a loss of control and food sometimes becomes a replacement for something else they are lacking in their lives. They continuously absorb endless amounts of food not for need but because their body demands and craves it and they can do little but listen and obey. Although this can be an extremely serious disease it can be helped as long as it is neither ignored nor dismissed.

Ever have something bad happen and go right for the refrigerator? This behavior is typical of someone addicted to food. The problem here is that when high you get from you favorite comfort food is gone but the problem will still be there. Some people think about food every hour of the day and are always planning that next meal. We’ve all heard of the binge eaters who hide food around the house and binge when others aren’t around. This is a classic sign of food addiction. We try to fool ourselves into thinking if no one sees us it’s alright. We all heard it from our parents, “Don’t get up from the table until you clean your plate; there are people in Africa that are starving.” I never did figure out how cleaning my plate would help those starving people. So, now measure your foods out in healthy portions and then clean your plate. Many people addicted to food get that guilty feeling after indulging and get caught up in a cycle of eating, feeling guilty and then eating more. This is the typical behavior of the yo-yo dieter. Now doing any one of these things does not mean that you are addicted to food, but if you take a long look at yourself and examine your behavior carefully and if you see a pattern repeated over and over, chances are you should seek the assistance of an expert in this field of food addiction. We all really need to forgive oursleves, get the professional help we need and enjoy life without making food tha main part of our enjoyment.
