Healthy Snacking

Healthy snacking is important for good health and weight loss to feel satisfied. Snacking helps to prevent deprivation on a weight loss plan, and also to keep your energy levels going.

If you are a diabetic as in my case, snacks are important in order to maintain your blood sugar levels and create stability there.

How do you choose a good snack? Well, choosing a good in between meal treat means looking for foods that contain complex carbohydrates, and not simple carbohydrates, in which there are a lot of sugars.

Paying attention to what it is you are eating is very important. The Weight Watcher's plan teaches this through and through. Knowing whether or not exactly, something is healthy takes good judgment. Anything on the market that says it is natural, may be filled with loads of calories and sugars. For healthy snacking I would suggest:

1. Planning snacks ahead along with meals or make them ahead of schedule for the next day.

2. Give yourself a variety of selections and not just one or two. Some ideas and food for thought, (no pun intended), are:

Those 100 calorie packs that are portioned out for you. They have many varieties available.

Rice cakes. They have many different flavors and these are low in calories, and fat.

A small muffin in a Jiffy mix size, or, half of one large muffin.

Popcorn that is Healthy Choice air popped microwave. That is one of my favorites.

Pretzel rods are very good. You can eat three for one serving keeping calories low.

Flavored yogurt is great for snacking if you choose the Yoplait Lite, or other Dannon Lowfat Yogurt.

Keep a veggie tray for snacking of cut up carrots, cauliflower, cherry tomatoes, and cucumbers. You can dip these in nonfat ranch dressing.

Tortilla chips and salsa are a good healthy snacking choice. Buy the tortilla chips that are low in fat.

Graham crackers always make a nice snack. They are low in calories and fat.

The whole key to snacking healthfully is by doing it in moderation as with all eating. You should be able to squeeze in three snacks per day on your weight loss plan and still be able to take off weight.
