Scarsdale Diet
The Scarsdale Diet
is another one of those fad diets which is anything but nutritionally sound. It causes a rapid weight loss and as soon as you go back to eating normally, the weight comes back. You don't really learn anything by it.
The diet was developed by a Dr. Herman Tamover. The Scarsdale Diet is an older plan as well which has been around for quite a bit of time now.
You are supposed to lose one pound per day while on the plan. You get to eat the fruits and vegetables, along with lean proteins that the author has listed. You are not allowed to snack at all besides your three square meals daily. The diet plan was created to go on for no longer than 2 weeks due to the very tight restrictions and deprivation it presents.
Exercise is not recommended on this plan. It is recommended to drink tons of water to cleanse your system of impurities while on plan. You can have diet sodas.
The carbohydrates you are permitted to eat on this diet are limited to whole-grains, vegetables and beans. Any other carbohydrate outside of this box is not allowed.
Insofar as seasonings on your proteins, you can have salt, pepper, lemon, vinegar, herbs, mustard, and ketchup.
A typical day on the plan goes about like this:
On the first day of the Scarsdale Diet, you can have your sugarless beverage of choice and 1/2 grapefruit for breakfast. For lunch, any amounts of protein that is lean you can eat along with a beverage. And then for dinner on day one, eat fish that is broiled, salad that consists of just lettuce and tomatoes, and then grapefruit.
On day two of the Scarsdale Diet, you get your morning coffee or tea, along with 1/2 of a grapefruit for your breakfast. At lunch time, you can eat all the fruited salad you want with a beverage. At supper on day two, plenty of veggies along with a hamburger only; no roll included.
On day three, you start as usual at breakfast, beginning with your morning coffee/and tea and the grapefruit which is only a 1/2 grapefruit. At lunch, you can eat tuna fish, and the ubiquitous grapefruit or cantalope. Supper consists of 2 pork chops that are lean cut, mixed greens, and beverage.
On day four, the same depriving breakfast cycle, and for lunch, you can have 2 scrambled eggs along with cottage cheese. You can add a yellow vegetable, (squash)in 3 oz only, along with 1 slice toast and your beverage. Dinnertime means grilled chicken on day four here, without skin, and a green pepper and spinach.
On day five, the breakfast cycle repeats itself as in the other days. For lunch, you can have any dry cheese you like along with fresh spinach and 1 slice toast. For supper, you can eat fish again that is broiled, have some mixed greens or veggies, (not both), and your 1 slice toast.
On day six, breakfast repeated the same, for lunch, you can eat fruit salad, and then for dinner broiled chicken with no skin, tomatoes and lettuce in your tossed salad, and add either cantaloupe or grapefruit.
And finally, on day seven, breakfast repeats as usual the same boring way. At lunch, you may eat chicken that is served either cold or hot, you tossed salad with lettuce and tomato, add a grapefruit or cantaloupe. For supper, you get to eat lean beef, and tossed greens.
The Scarsdale Diet is impossible to live with, and especially if you are diabetic and dependent like me, on insulin. It would not balance out your insulin to carbs ratio that your body needs, and you would always be into insulin shock as in these other fad diets I have spoken of here. No doctor in his right sound mind, or nutritionist would ever recommend it.
